Colorado City, Arizona

Located in the Mohave County of Arizona, the town Colorado City is also known as ‘Short Creek’. The members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints founded this town in 1913. The members of this sect practiced polygamy & it was until July 1953 that this practice was stopped by troops sent by the Governor of Arizona.

The United Effort Plan owns most of the property of the town. The Colorado City records the highest number of cases of Fumarase deficiency- a disease that causes severe mental retardation. Geneticists say that the reason behind such a disease can be traced to the prevalence of marriage between cousins between descendants of two of the town’s founders. The Church ownership of the Colorado City lands was dethroned by the state authorities in 2007.

Colorado City K-12 Public School is the only school in Colorado City. The Masada Charter School, on the other hand, lies within the limits of the Centennial Park. Several other board members retreated when this district was taken over by the State Government in 2005 owing to utter mismanagement. It has been found out that at least three Mormon fundamentalist sects are based here.
