Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon attracts many tourists every year. It is a place of geographical interest. Largely a part of the Grand Canyon National Park in the United States of America, the Grand Canyon is steep-sided gorge carved by river Colorado, in the US state of Arizona & parts of Nevada.

A 2008 research result suggests that this canyon was formed by the Colorado River over a period of seventeen million years. The scenic beauty of the Grand Canyon is awe-inspiring. It covers a large area ranging over 446km in length, over 6.4- 29km wide & 1.6km in depth. The Kaibab Arch is the area where the merger occurred between the river flowing from the north & bends towards the west. The Colorado River & its tributaries cut layers of the rock to uplift the Colorado Plateau.

It is pertinent to note that the Proterozoic & Paleozoic strata of rocks are exposed in the uplifted portion of the Colorado Plateau, which is the Grand Canyon. The exposed rock layers in the walls of the Grand Canyon are of great help in knowing about the geological history of the North American continent.
