If you are hoping for a day amidst the quiet of nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Slide Rock State Park is exactly where you should be. This is one of the highly popular tourist attractions in Arizona, receiving its name from Slide Rock, a renowned slippery creek. Plenty of streams and rocky terrain abound this park in Oak Creek Canyon that is ideal for family outings and social gatherings. This park greets its visitors with extensive swimming areas, hiking trails, picnic spots and much more.

Slide Rock State Park History

The park was initially developed as an agricultural property by Frank Pendley. Under Homestead Act, he possessed the land in the year 1910 and set up an irrigation system which helped his apple orchard flourish in the year 1912. After observing possibilities of tourism in the area he even constructed cabins for tourists in the year 1933, remnants of which can still be found in the park.

Picture 1 - Slide Rock State Park

Arizona State Parks, later, bought the property from Arizona Parklands Foundation which had earlier acquired it from the Pendley family. In the year 1991 the entire Pendley Homestead Historic District was incorporated into the National Register of Historic Places.

Slide Rock State Park Direction

While traveling from Flagstaff, avail the Highway 89A towards south and from Phoenix, take I-17 N to Highway 179 west that will take you through Sedona, where the park is located towards the north.

Slide Rock State Park Weather

For camping or hiking, the best time of the year to visit this park in Sedona, Arizona, is spring, which also happens to be the busiest time owing to the excellent weather conditions for outdoor activities.

You may consider taking a trip to the park during the summer to beat the heat by taking a refreshing dip in the streams. The park is a pleasure to visit during fall and spring as nature appears to be in full bloom that time. Basically, you have your own reasons for visiting the park during all the four seasons.

Slide Rock State Park Activities

Hiking Trails

Choose from the three hiking trails in this Oak Creek Canyon Park namely – Slide Rock Route, Pendley Homestead Trail and Clifftop Nature Trail. None of the trails are dangerous to tread.

Slide Rock Route is a moderate 0.3 mile trail which leads to the swim area in the Oak Creek. Major attraction in this region is the natural water slide. You will come across a footbridge and a historic rock cabin while trailing down the path.

Pendley Homestaed Trail is a paved route leading through the historic apple orchards and tourist cabins. While trotting along this path you will get to see remnants of the farming equipments, apple orhchards, apple packing barn and the Pendley house apart from the breathtaking views of Oak Creek Canyon’s walls.

For more scenic beauty, take the Clifftop Nature Trail all about 0.25 mile. Slide Rock Swim Area is just nearby.

Flora and Fauna

At the Slide Rock, you will be amazed to find javelin, Coues white-tailed deer, black beer, coyote, great blue herons, bald eagles and black-tailed rattle snake among a list of other animals and birds. Ponderosa Pine, Buck Brush, Box Elder are some of the vegetation prevalent in the park.

Swimming

There are plenty of places to swim around the Slide Rock which originally lends the park its name. You will find vast stretches of red flat rocks where you can laze around in winters and glide along the slippery ride into the water. There are numerous swimming dens and pools that make this park a great swimming destination in Sedona. Cliffs surrounding the natural pools or swimming holes are popular among the visitors as jumping rocks as well.

Picture 2 - Slide Rock State Park Image

Lost Dutchman State Park Location

The park is situated at the foothills of the Superstitious Mountains at the eastern end of the Phoenix Metropolitan area which is near the Apache Junction, Arizona. To reach the park one has to take the Superstition Freeway to Idaho Road and go to the north of the Apache Junction and to Arizona Highway 88 from where one has to follow the Apache trail.

Lost Dutchman State Park History

Legend has it that the goldmines adjacent to the Park had been under the possession of the Apache Indians who had stored their artifacts and other precious materials in the caves of the mountains. Peralta Family of Mexico arrived at this mine for their quest of Gold and it is rumored that they had gathered lots of riches before they were brutally massacred during the winter of 1847-1848. This folklore has led many enthusiasts to seek gold and most of them have either been killed or have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. German treasure hunters Jacob Waltz and Jacob Weiser (Dutchman) made quite a fortune from this goldmine with the aid of a member of the Peralta family. However, both of them eventually fled the mines after being attacked by the Apaches. Both treasure seekers later confessed to having secured a good fortune for themselves. Since then, many more people have scoured the area in greed for gold.

Junipine Resort History

The Junipine Resort in Oak Creek Canyon has been serving their guests from around the world for over 25 years. This beautiful resort was redeveloped in the year 1984. Before that, this property was known as Junipine Cabins featuring a small number of villa-style buildings, one gas pump and one country store. The unique name “Junipine” is derived from a pine and a juniper tree growing together for more than 70 years near the property premises.

Picture 1 - Junipine Resort

During the redevelopment, the individual villa owners were given the option of participating in rental pools or use their villas as a secondary home. Junipine Resort maintains that philosophy even today as majority of the cottage owners participate in rental pools and have the freedom of decorating their cottages according to their personal preferences.

Junipine Resort Accommodation

The Heard Museum is a museum dedicated to the Native American Art and Culture. It is situated in the city of Phoenix, Arizona.

The Heard museum is nonetheless an embodiment of art, culture and a celebration of life as a whole. Intensive collections, exquisite exhibitions and awesome festivals make Heard museum a must-visit destination in Arizona.

It also seeks to educate the public about the authentic culture and art of the Native people especially ones belonging to the Southwest.

There are two branches namely the Heard Museum North Scottsdale branch located in Scottsdale and the Heard Museum west branch in Surprise

Getting There

The Heard Museum happens to be situated on Central Avenue, exactly four blocks north from McDowell Road.

This museum can be reached via I-10 heading west as well as I-10 heading east. Further information and maps are available on the official website.

Heard Museum History

The history of Heard Museum traces its root in the hands of pioneers Dwight B. and Maie Bartlett Heard who had founded it in 1929. Somewhere around 1926, the Heards happened to have bought a number of items of archaeological significance from Polk Street in Phoenix. The archaeological artistry traced their origin to the La Ciudad Indian ruin.

These people had initially set up the museum with a motive of displaying their small personal collection of artistry. This personal interest and hobby of the Heards had ignited a force of tremendous inspiration on generations that followed ever since, making Heard Museum internationally famous. From an ordinary museum native to a small southwestern town, the Heard Museum has come a long way housing a brilliant collection of more than 40,000 items. Moreover it is also home to an exclusive library containing more than 34,000 books. Over the years, this museum underwent a significant change in both size and infrastructure. Currently the museum rests on over 130,000 square feet area housing several galleries, performance space and classrooms.

Today, Heard Museum has earned international recognition world wide for its authentic collection, intensive educational programs and distinctive festivals. The museum is frequented by over 2,50000 visitors annually from around the world.

Heard Museum Exhibits

The Heard Museum is renowned for its brilliant exhibits inspired by the museum’s own exclusive collection of American Indian art. Some six to eight latest exhibitions are demonstrated at the museum every year. Apart from this, several ongoing exhibits are also held at the museum all year round.

There are a total of 10 separate galleries displaying an array of artistry for you to feast your eyes on!

Home: Native People in the Southwest

The theme of the exhibit revolves around representation of the Southern Native people; their culture and history.

As such the artists’ voices are beautifully blended with the display of over 2000 of the museum’s best pieces of artistry narrating stories of the past and present about the native southwest.

The exhibit also features intriguing displays of the very famous Hopi katsina dolls acquired from the collections of Barry Goldwater, Sen and Fred Harvey Company. Patrons would also get to become a part of four video demonstrations, a Navajo Hogan or lodge covered with earth, interactive sound and video stations, artist presentations and a media room too.

The Barry Goldwater Collection of 437 Hopi Kachina Dolls

Heard Museum is remarkable for the exclusive Barry Goldwater collection of colorful and extraordinary Kachna dolls.

These dolls are images created by using cottonwood. The Hopi Kachina figures are said to be an embodiment of the features of the masked spirits or Kachina belonging to the Hopi Native American tribe. The Hopi Kachina dolls are not meant for the purpose of child’s play or worship idols. On the contrary these dolls are highly treasured as objects of analysis.

Exhibition on 19th century boarding school experiences of the Native Americans

The aim of the exhibit was to surface a controversial matter about the brutal experiences of those thousands of children of the 19th century. Old uniforms, oral interviews, haunting photographs and records are used as tools to trigger this powerful exhibit.

These children were treated as hooligans and forced out of their reservations and sent to torturous government schools with the motive to erase their culture and to ‘civilize’ them.

Navajo Textiles: 100+ Years of Weaving

Patrons can feast their eyes on some of the finest pieces of Navajo weaving dating back to the late 19th century that were supposedly inspired by the collection at the Heard Museum.

There are many striking exhibits held at the Heard Museum all year round like the Marleen Allen Nichols Collection featuring 260 pieces of fine contemporary jewelry, the Art of Ceremony and many more. More information on the current and on going exhibits can be found in the official website.
