Canyon De Chelly (pronounced “shay”) became a national monument in February 1931. It was given different names to match the right pronunciation. It was Canon of Cheille, Canyon Chenelle, Chelly Canyon and Canyon Chennele. In 1932 all variations were eliminated for Canyon de Chelly.
